Professor Wen XU received the BSc degree at Sichuan University in 1982, the MSc degree at the Institute of Solid State Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1985, and the PhD degree at the University of Antwerp, Belgium in 1992. From 1992 to 2006, he had worked at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), the University of Wollongong (Australia), and the Australian National University (ANU) as an academic staff. He was a Senior Fellow at the ANU and the QEII Research Fellow of the Australian Research Council before moving back to China. Prof Xu joined the Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) in 2006 and now is a Professor and the vice head of the section at the ISSP, CAS. Since 2009, he has been a Specially Appointed Professor at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, Yunnan University.
Prof Xu’s research field includes: (1) theoretical study: semiconductor and nanostructure device physics. The electronic band structure, electron (magneto) transport, opto-electronic and magneto-optical properties, plasmonics, spintronics, ultrafast phenomenon, hypersonics in low-dimensional and nanostructured electronic systems; (2) experimental study: electron (magneto) transport, opto-electronic and magneto-optical properties, terahertz opto-electronic properties in low-dimensional and nanostructured electronic systems, including high-field and low-temperature magneto-transport, photoluminescence, light transmittance, reflectance, and photo-conductance measurements; (3) scientific instrumental development: including high-field terahertz magneto-optical measurement facility and facility for the measurement of opto-electronic properties in the presence of terahertz free-electron laser radiation. Since 2006, his research work has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Department of Science and Technology of Yunnan province with the total research funding over 15 Million Chinese Yuan. The related research work has been carried out in collaboration internationally with the University of Antwerp (Belgium), Oxford University (UK), Australian National University, Concordia University (Canada), Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands), FOM Institute of Plasma Physics (Netherlands), City University of New York (USA), US Army Research Lab, etc., and nationally with Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics, Sichuan University, Fudan University, Institute of Physics (CAS), Chinese University of Science and Technology, etc.
Prof Xu has published 4 invited chapters in academic books, 6 invited review articles in scientific journals, and over 200 papers in international SCI journals such as Physical Review Letters (PRL), Physical Review B (PRB), Applied Physics Letters (APL), Optics Letters, etc. He has been a referee for 15 academic journals such as PRL, PRB, APL, etc. He has also been an international reviewer for scientific research foundations such as the Australian Research Council (Australia), National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (Canada), and Research Foundation – Flanders (Belgium).
Prof Xu’s lab at Yunnan University is equipped with an advanced multi-functional facility mainly with HORIBA JOBIN YVON opto-electronic measurement systems. It can measure the photoluminescence, light transmittance, reflectance, and photo-conductance measurements over a wide spectrum regime from UV (280 nanometer wavelength) to mid-infrared (14 micrometer wavelength). Together with an Oxford closed-loop cooler, the optical experiments can be carried out via varying temperature from 4 K to 350 K. Currently, we are working on the investigation into opto-electronic properties of graphene, carbon quantum-dots, metal nano-array structure, LMO films, micro/nano-structured foamed gold, nucleic acid, etc.
