Project I: Single nanoporous gold nanowire sensors
  • Controlled chemical etching process by monitoring transport properties of Ag-Au nanowires

  • Characterized transport properties of nanowire sensors during molecular adsorption

  • Demonstrated single nanoporous gold nanowire sensors for sulfahydryl adsorption with high sensitivity (>3%)

  • Built and programmed a testing system for nanowire sensors

  • Developed a real-time switch system for multilayer electrodeposition with 1 ms resolution

Project II: Synthesis of Ni nanotubes and nanorings
  • Electrodeposited  Ni-Cu thin films and nanowires to form core/shell microstructure

  • Discovered a novel core/shell microstructure in electrodeposited Ni-Cu

  • Fabricated Ni nanotubes and nanorings by electrochemical etching the Cu-rich phase

  • Developed a new electrochemical method to fabricate ferromagnetic nanotubes and nanorings

  • Modeled formation mechanism of Ni-Cu core/shell structure in electrodeposition

  • Developed a new technique to prepare TEM cross section samples for nanostructures
